Privacy policy
Last updated 17 October 2026
FamJam (getfamjam.com and the FamJam apps for iPhone and Android) lets families post photos and stories, then prints them each month as a newspaper and posts it to relatives, usually grandparents in India. Family photos and addresses are private, and this policy explains how we look after them. If anything is unclear, email hello@getfamjam.com.
Who we are
FamJam is run by Junaid Ahmed, who is the data controller for the personal data described here. Contact: hello@getfamjam.com.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address, name, profile photo and your relationship to the family (for example “Son”). If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address from them. We never see your Google or Apple password.
- What you share in a family: posts, photos, captions, comments, reactions and family dates such as birthdays. We remove location and camera details (EXIF) from photos when they are uploaded.
- Recipient details: the name, postal address, PIN code and phone number of the people who receive the printed newspaper. A family admin adds these, usually for a relative who doesn’t use FamJam.
- Settings: which notifications you want and your family role (owner, admin or member).
- Usage and diagnostics: pages and screens you open, buttons you tap, errors, device and browser type, and approximate location from your IP address. We also record some sessions to find bugs. In those recordings photos and videos are blocked, text you type is masked, and family posts are hidden.
- Payments: when paid plans start, our payment provider Stripe will handle your card. We will see only the plan, its status and the last four digits of the card.
How we use it
- To run your account and your family’s private space.
- To lay out, print and post each month’s newspaper to the recipients you choose.
- To send sign-in codes, reminders before each month’s cut-off and notices that a paper is ready. You can turn off reminders in Notifications or with the unsubscribe link in any email.
- To keep FamJam secure, fix problems and decide what to improve.
- To answer you when you contact us.
We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or show ads. We do not use your photos or posts to train AI models.
Legal bases (UK and EU GDPR)
- Contract: running your account, your family space, and printing and posting the newspaper.
- Legitimate interests: security, fixing errors, understanding how FamJam is used, and processing recipients’ details so their family can send them a newspaper.
- Legal obligation: keeping payment records once paid plans start.
- Consent: anywhere we ask for it. You can withdraw consent at any time.
Who can see your data
- Your family: members of a family see that family’s posts, photos, comments and member names. Only family admins see recipients’ addresses and phone numbers; other members see recipients’ names only.
- Recipients: the people who get the printed newspaper see the posts that are printed in it.
- Print and postal partners: they receive the newspaper file and the recipient’s name and address so they can print and post it.
- Service providers who process data for us under contract:
- Supabase: database, file storage and sign-in (servers in Frankfurt, Germany)
- Netlify: website hosting
- PostHog: usage analytics, error reports and session recordings (EU servers)
- Resend: email delivery
- Browserless: turning each issue into a print-ready PDF
- Google and Apple: sign-in, if you choose them
- Stripe: payments, once paid plans start
- Authorities, only if the law requires it.
International transfers
Our main data store is in the EU. Newspapers are printed and posted in India, so recipients’ names and addresses and the printed pages go to India. Some providers are based in the United States. Where data leaves the UK or EU, we rely on adequacy decisions, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (and its UK extension), or Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long we keep it
- Account data: until you delete your account.
- Posts and photos: until you delete them, or until the family is deleted. If you leave or delete your account, posts you shared in a family with other members stay with that family and show “Former member” instead of your name.
- Recipient details: until an admin removes the recipient or the family is deleted.
- Printed newspapers (PDFs): kept for the family’s archive until the family is deleted.
- Analytics: up to 12 months. Session recordings: up to 30 days.
- Database backups: expire on a rolling basis, after which deleted data is gone.
How to delete your account explains exactly what is removed.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Photos sit in private storage and open only through short-lived links for members of your family. Database rules let each person read only their own families’ data, and print links expire after 15 minutes. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects you, we will tell you and the regulator as the law requires.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to show, correct, export or delete your data, or to stop processing it. Email hello@getfamjam.com and we will reply within 30 days. You can delete your account yourself in the app under My profile.
- UK and EU: you also have the right to restrict or object to processing and to complain to a regulator: in the UK the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk), in the EU your local data protection authority.
- California: you have the right to know, delete and correct personal information and not to be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- India (DPDP Act 2023): you can ask for a summary of your data, correction and erasure, and nominate someone to act for you. Our grievance contact is hello@getfamjam.com. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Recipients who don’t use FamJam
If you receive a FamJam newspaper, a relative added your name and address so we could post it to you. We use them only for that. To stop receiving the newspaper or have your details removed, ask your family or email hello@getfamjam.com.
Children
FamJam accounts are for adults (18 and over). Parents and relatives may share photos of children inside their private family space. If you believe a child has made an account, email us and we will delete it.
Cookies and local storage
We use your browser’s local storage and cookies to keep you signed in, save post drafts and run PostHog analytics. We don’t use advertising cookies.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. For important changes we will tell you in the app or by email before they apply. See also our terms of service.
